it would be great if this app could read outlook contacts. i dont want to export my outlook contacts to windows live just to use this app.

Unfortuantely that's not how WP7 works. The only way you can put a contact to your phone contact list is to sync with Windows Live.

Can you see the outlook contact in people hub? If you could see it in People, it should works, however, you may need to add a phone number for the contact, since the app only search contact with telephone no.
